When to see a lactation consultant
You are not being dramatic. Most mums wait far longer than they need to before asking for breastfeeding help. If any of this sounds like your week, it is worth having a lactation consultant look at it properly.
- Feeding hurts, or your nipples are cracked, blistered or misshapen after a feed
- You are worried about milk supply, either not enough or far too much
- Blocked ducts, or that hot achy mastitis feeling that keeps coming back
- Feeds that go on forever and nobody seems satisfied at the end
- Baby fusses, arches or refuses the breast
- Weight gain or nappy output that somebody has raised a question about
- You are heading back to work and have no idea how any of this will fit
Meet your consultant
Joanna is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, an IBCLC, which is the highest credential in lactation care anywhere in the world. Not a weekend course. Board certified, with continuing education to keep it, and a mum of three herself.
She has spent years in Singapore living rooms with exhausted parents and very small people, and she is extremely hard to shock. Bring your questions, your partner, your mum, your helper, and whatever mess you have not got round to. Nobody is judging the laundry.
Her approach to breastfeeding support is evidence based and judgement free: watch a real feed, work out what is actually happening, and leave you with a plan in plain language that you can follow on three hours of sleep.
What a lactation consultant helps with
Prenatal lactation consultations
Prenatal lactation consultations run from around 34 weeks of pregnancy. You cover how colostrum works, hand expression, positions that will not wreck your back, what a good feed actually looks like, and a breastfeeding plan shaped around your own medical history. Starting with a plan beats starting with a panic.

How a consultation works
- Pick your session and pay here. Home visit or video, and the length that suits. If you are not sure, take the longer one for a first session.
- We get in touch to schedule. We use the contact details on your order to find you a slot, often same day or next day. If we are full we will say so straight away rather than leave you waiting.
- The session itself. A real feed observed, a proper assessment, and everything explained as it happens rather than at you.
- Your written plan. Plain language, in your hands, with follow up afterwards because the real questions always arrive at midnight.
Private lactation consultant or hospital support
Both are valid and there is no wrong answer here. Hospital and polyclinic breastfeeding support in Singapore is subsidised, which matters. A private consultation buys time, continuity and your own home.
| Private consultation | Hospital or polyclinic | |
|---|---|---|
| Session length | 60 to 120 minutes | Usually shorter |
| Where | Your own home, or video | A clinic room |
| Who you see | The same IBCLC every time | Whoever is on duty that day |
| Follow up | Included afterwards | Varies |
| Cost | $75 to $340 | Subsidised |
And if your situation is better handled by a doctor, you will be told so plainly.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a lactation consultant cost in Singapore?
Private sessions in Singapore generally run between $150 and $350. At gooberr, video consultations start at $75 and home visits are $190 to $340 depending on length.
What does IBCLC mean?
IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. It is the only globally recognised clinical credential in lactation, it takes supervised clinical hours and a board exam to earn, and it has to be recertified. Plenty of people offering breastfeeding help do not hold it.
How soon can I see a lactation consultant?
Often the same day if you book early, otherwise the next day. Book a session or ask us through the contact page and you will get an honest answer about what is open.
Do I need to tidy up before a home visit?
No. Please do not. She is coming to watch a feed, not to inspect your flat.
Can my partner or my mum sit in?
Yes, and we would rather they did. The people around you at 3am make an enormous difference.
What if we are mixed feeding?
You are still very welcome. The role here is to support your feeding goals, whatever they look like, without judgement.
Should I book a home visit or a video consultation?
Book a home visit if something needs eyes and hands on it. A video consultation suits a specific question, or an expert opinion you want quickly.
Is a lactation consultant worth paying for?
If feeding hurts, if you are worried about supply, or if baby is refusing the breast, then yes. Those are exactly the things that are hard to fix from a search engine and quick to shift once a lactation consultant has watched a feed.
A word on expectations. Every breastfeeding journey is its own thing, so no consultation promises you a particular result or a timeline. What you get is a proper assessment from a board certified lactation consultant and a plan you can actually follow. If your baby is unwell, please see your doctor first.
